The journalist's life curitibano Raul Gomes, from his youth, was dotted by numerous episodes linked to political and social history of Paraná, sometimes as simple spectator, either as active participant.
So when the enactment of Constituency 34, after the revolution of São Paulo, two parties were operating here in Curitiba:
the Social Democratic Party, headed by virtually intervenor Manuel Ribas, and the Social Nationalist Party, dominated by the figure of Colonel Mena Barreto. The current Republican Union had called for Muñoz leader Caetano da Rocha.
However, Manuel Ribas, temperament nonpartisan, an indecipherable dumbness without express its pleasure or displeasure by his party, assumed an attitude perplexing, filled with apprehension their coreligionists, the PSD party members, as it was in contact with the other two factions, visiting Mena Barreto and conniving with Muñoz Rocha.
Although worried and even frightened by this unusual procedure, the commanded the "gross bonnet" dared not you start a speech frank and decisive, especially in relation to the upcoming elections.
Reigned in the ranks PSD party members visible restlessness.
Raul Gomes, by this time, militated in "The Day" Caio Machado and daring reporter who was determined to go to the Palace, put everything in clean dishes, get to the boss PSD a definitive statement about his party position.
Early in the morning go to the Chief of Police, Lauro Lopes, the federal bench, and communicates its decision.
We were on September 29, 1934. Lauro tries to consider otherwise, but Raul reaffirms its presence across the Interventor had no political connotations - was only in the performance of his duties as a journalist. The chief of police calls to the palace and then pays the cabinet chief information due.
And there goes our Raul by Rua Rio Branco, penetrates the seat of government funds, it is advertising and is greeted warmly by Interventor, having at his side Gaspar Veloso, director of Education.
Asked as to why the hearing as requested urgent Raul Gomes candidly exposes the disturbing situation Interventor PSD party members, fearful around the date of the election and the political uncertainty of his head higher.
I was there as a journalist eager for a sensational "scoop" reporting, as his followers wished him only as a proclamation as categorical candidate PSD.
Raul opens his book by putting it on the table.
Ribas delivers a pen.
This does not have to beg.
Compose a short text, date and sign.
But by Gaspar Veloso found a small mistake, Ribas writes another text, this definitive and reproduced here: "To finish with rumors spread concerning my stay in the State, declare that I belong to this people and give him the last of my days.
I agree, so my application to State Government, launched by PSD. Curitiba, September 29, 1934. Manoel Ribas ".
Raul smiles, satisfied.
Mission accomplished. And for many years retain fondly that notebook with both versions.
Time: Manuel Ribas was elected Governor, indirectly, by the Legislature, to rule from 1935 to 1937, and again be Interventor appointed by Getúlio Vargas, 1937-1945. Ruled Paraná, so for 13 consecutive years, from 1932 to 1945.
